New Beginnings, a Podcast, and a Giveaway...

You may have noticed that I changed my blog name from Attorney to Temp to Legally Obligated.  I did this because I am no longer a temp, and I'm no longer just transitioning out of practicing law, but I still feel compelled to tell my story and to support other people who are deep in student loan debt.  So I thought Legally Obligated would be a more appropriate name.  Anyway, here is my first podcast!  (Scroll to the bottom to listen.)  Hopefully it will help me reach more people who are going through the same things I did.  I experienced some technical difficulties, but I think the next one will be smooth sailing.  So apologies for any volume level variations and such.

My first podcast includes my take on the U.S. News Law School rankings that were released last week, plus a story about an encounter I had with a woman who is considering going to law school, and some other
fun stuff.  I also include instructions for how to enter my blog giveaway (don't worry, it's really easy).  This week, I am giving away a copy of Dave Ramsey's book, The Total Money Makeover, along with some
envelopes and labels for getting started on the envelope system.  If you're in debt like I was, it might be  up your alley!

Next week, my podcast will include an interview with a former law school classmate, who has successfully transitioned into a non-legal position.  I am interviewing him tomorrow afternoon, so if you have any particular questions you'd like me to ask him, please leave a comment or email me (recovering.lawyer1@gmail.com) and I will try to fit it into the interview.

Music from the podcast is courtesy of TheInternetAudioGuy.com ("Wow" theme) and RoyaltyFreeMusicLibrary.com ("Blues 2" clip).

Here are the rules for my blog sweepstakes:

1.  No purchase necessary and void where prohibited.
2.  Open to U.S. residents 18 or older.
3.  Entries can be made before March 29, 2013, at 12:00 p.m. PST.  Listen to the podcast linked below for instructions on how to submit a valid entry.
4.  On or about March 29, 2013, at 12:00 p.m., I will randomly select the winner by placing the names of the entrants into a hat and picking one out (high tech, I know).  I will announce the winner on my blog on Saturday, March 30, and I will email the winner as well.
5.  Only one entry per person is permitted.
6.  The prize is:  a hard-cover copy of The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey, a set of blue Gartner envelopes (quantity 50), and a package of Post-it multi-use labels (quantity 40).  The approximate retail value is $25.
7.  If my site goes down, or I experience other technical issues that last at least 12 hours, I will extend the entry period until a date to be determined.
8.  If I am unable to contact the first selected winner (if an invalid email address is given or no email address is provided, or if the winner fails to reply to my email with their delivery info within 24 hours), then I will randomly select another winner.
9.  Once the winner contacts me with their delivery info, I will mail the prize within 2 business days via first-class mail.  I will only accept entries from U.S. residents, and I will only ship to a U.S. address.

Enjoy and as always, thanks for listening!

  1. I am glad to see that you have started pod-casting. Frankly, many young people - potential law school victims - do not read anything, other than their assigned school work. Thank you for helping to document this filthy industry.

    1. Thanks, Nando! I'm enjoying the process. Even if it saves just one person, it's worth it. It occurred to me that I should interview you, but I'm not sure if that's something you'd be interested in...

  2. Nice job. How can you help them out? Say, "Really want to know what law school is like? Give me your address. I will send you a 'pay ticket' coupon every month for the next 6 months that you owe FEDLOAN $1350.00 that month. Then you'll figure out if you want to go to school." Better yet, ask prospective students to do an experiment: ask five attorneys that they personally know if they'd hire them (if these OL's had JD on their resumes). If they don't get one offer, that's the canary in the mine (if you can't get people who personally know you to hire you, how are you going to get total strangers who speak to you for two hours to hire you?)...

    1. Those are both great ideas! Especially the one about asking five attorneys if they'd hire him or her. I wish I would have done that before law school.

    2. I wish I would have stuck to my gut instinct and pressed forward with something I'm gifted in instead of getting sidetracked.

17 year old just blew up the party (started a company at 15 and just sold it for $30MM to Yahoo):

  3. I too am extremely pleased to learn about this new podcast (and what a well-produced podcast it is). A great additional resource for prelaws looking for advice. I've updated your blog info on our site, and I look forward to hearing more from you.

  4. I just added up the amount I spent on groceries so far in the month of March. I'm thinking maybe I should just go hungry! :)

  5. I used to work for a hungry misogynist; now THAT was hell!! Lol
Good podcast. My attorney-step-dad is constantly telling ppl not to go to law school. He's jaded, works shitty hours, hates his job, and has tons of student loan debt.

    1. Oh yes, when those misogynists get hungry, hold on to your Funyuns 'cause shit's gonna get serious. I'm glad your step-dad is doing his part when it comes to warning our young. Don't do it, kids... (P.S. Entry noted.) :)

  6. I am an attorney. I am not sure yet hungry or misogynist or both or neither. I love working with the law. Now, I am not licensed to practice law in this country.. so, after many years of trying different jobs, I am back in law school to get the right to sit for the bar. and oh, horror.. as the time is getting closer... instead of feeling excited about reaching my dream.. I started searching for sites like years.. am I doing the right thing extending myself this badly at my age?! Does any one ever listen to "good advice" in a timely manner??? how can I question this now after having worked with the law for so many years, after having tried not to work with the law and realizing it is my only passion???? how can I question if my decision was right??? am i going mad?

    1. Don't worry, if the law is your passion, then stick with it and try to find your niche. By "extending" yourself, do you mean you're taking on a lot of student loans to finish your JD? If you can find a way to pay cash, you might feel better about your financial position once you are done with law school. Have you gotten any job leads yet? If you're in a good school with a high class rank, I'm sure you'll find something. If it's your dream, do it, just don't ruin yourself financially in order to get there, you know? (Also, entry noted!)
