This week, I discuss the impact that declining law school enrollment has had on Catholic University's budget. (Spoiler alert: they're going to continue feeding at the law school loan trough, but some art courses and such are on the chopping block). Also, part 2 of my interview with Howard, a former law school classmate who is now working in a non-legal position. Howard and I discuss his first lawyer gig, and why he got out. And finally, a segment on
Phyllis Coletta's masterpiece, Quit Your Job and Live Your Dream (one caveat: pay off your debt first!). Enjoy...
I love your sites and your podcast. I love your take on law, law scam and lawland in general. Especially considering that you are a woman. Most women in lawland tend to benefit from the lawland scam at the expense of mostly schmucky men. Most women won't even admit that the scam exists. Most are oblivious to it because it usually benefits them. But you are an honest and wise one. And that is refreshing.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work.
PS: as a radio professional myself from time to time, I suggest that you slow down a bit in your delivery. Other than that, you are very good.
God bless!

Thanks so much for listening! And thank you for the suggestion to slow down on my delivery. I hope to improve over time. One thing that happens is when I'm editing, I tend to snip out all the spaces between my words so there's not a lot of dead air, but consequently it sometimes sounds like I'm talking at a mile a minute.
DeleteI'm more and more amazed every day at how much of an effect the scam bloggers have had on the legal industry. Nando posted an article on Third Tier Reality about a state bar that actually came out with a warning to prospective students about the crushing debt most law grads incur. How refreshing!
I just checked out your site - love it! I can tell I'm going to get addicted to reading all the threads. :)
I really enjoyed listening to your interview w/ Howard. Although I am a recent law graduate who was never able to find paid work as an attorney, I did intern (unpaid) for over a year and it was nice to hear Howard describe what I went through. My year as an unpaid intern can adequately be summed up as feeling inadequate every singe moment of the day and realizing I would never feel confident again.
ReplyDeleteLike Howard, I never felt good enough practicing the law and I decided that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life always feeling so completely unsure of myself. Yeah, the fact that there were no legal jobs helped me decide to permanently leave the legal field, no doubt. But I no longer feel guilty or bad about myself that I was unable to get paid legal work. I feel relief.
I am now in another profession and I realize that what I thought was a horrible thing (not being able to find a paid lawyer job) turned out to be the best thing that happened to me. I now have a job where I learn and improve every day w/out having that complete, overwhelmingly feeling of incompetence I experienced every day while I was in the legal field. It's so nice to be back in a field where I can feel appreciated for the skills I do have instead of always feeling that I am never good enough, never know enough and never work hard enough or fast enough. Thank-you for allowing me to hear someone else express what I went through.
I graduated from Catholic Law in 1996 and there were no jobs in that year. Case in point I got a full time job as a paralegal in June 1997.
ReplyDeleteIs there another episode where Howard talks about how he found a nonlegal job?
